OASES to hit Columbus!

OASES, the Ohio Area Student Environmental Summit, will take place February 8th-11th at Ohio State University in Columbus, and we're sending delegates!

OASES is a conference weekend being organized for ohio students by ohio students. It's going to focus on building power, using power, and not abusing power. We're going to talk about local, regional, and global environmental issues including things like recycling, deforestation, climate change, (damn) coal corporations. We hope to end the weekend with lobbying and a direct action, and we also hope to establish a framework to get some work done as a state.

Anyone in the Oberlin area who's interested in attending and riding down with us, do email bikefordemocracy@gmail.com

Arboretum Clean-Up a Great Success!

On Sunday, November 18th, Bike For Democracy led a clean-up of trash at Oberlin's arboretum with about 20 community and college volunteers, including City Councilmen David Ashenhurst and David Sonner. We gathered at the water tower and broke off into teams, to root out the glass shards and styrofoam nightcrawler containers buried beneath the leaves around our reservoir.

An hour and a bit later, we returned with three huge recycling bags full of bottles and cans, as well as four 50-gallon bags of rubbish, and assorted scrap metal and junk wood.

At the firepit, we dug carefully for broken glass, but were not able to remove all of it, and so we are making recommendations to the College Grounds Crew for a more thorough clean-up and replacement of the soil cover there. We are also volunteering to create Leave-No-Trace literature to post at the Arb', so that in the future people won't litter so much!

Our good friends played some old-timey music for us as we sorted the trash, and then we danced! Our efforts showed that this is joyous work, indeed,-- let's keep it up!

First action to be local environmental clean-up

BFD returned from the Powershift Summit in D.C. (powershift07.org) ready to work--the question is, are you ready for this Sunday..? BFD 2008's first action will be a coordinated cleanup of rubbish which is currently scattered about our town's little arboretum. You can come help beautify our green space, have some snacks, and tea, and learn about Bike For Democracy, too. Meeting time is 3 PM, at the Morgan St. entrance to the Arb, Oberlin, Ohio. Rain or shine. Bring your own trash bags.
